Tottenham have made it two wins from two after beating Manchester City to go top of the Premier League.
After a 4-0 thrashing in front of their own fans last season, Pep Guardiola’s side were undone again by Spurs on home turf.
The visitors took the lead after 35 minutes with Richarlison breaking the City offside trap with John Stones caught sleeping.
The Brazil international scored twice on the opening weekend of the season, turning provider today to tee up Brennan Johnson who produced a smart finish.
City were rattled and almost conceded a second moments later with James Trafford perhaps lucky to avoid punishment after racing out of his box and catching Mohamed Kudus.
Trafford, given the nod ahead of Ederson who was back on the bench, was at fault again shortly after for Tottenham’s second.
With City choosing to pass out from the back, the 22-year-old inexplicably looked for Nico Gonzalez inside his own box with Pape Sarr immediately pouncing.
The ball broke to Joao Palhinha who scored on his full Tottenham debut on the stroke of half-time.
City laboured in the second-half with Rodri and Phil Foden coming off the bench to little success.
Having eased to a 3-0 win over Burnley last weekend, Spurs move top of the Premier League – at least for a few hours.
Why was James Trafford not sent off?
Trafford had a woeful game on his home debit back at City and was lucky not to be sent off.
The 22-year-old was at fault for Tottenham’s opener, giving the ball away inside his own box with a stray pass that was pounced upon by the opposition.
But he was perhaps lucky to still be on the pitch by that point.
Shortly after Spurs had taken the lead through Johnson, Kudus raced through on goal. Trafford raced out to meet him and appeared to handle the ball outside the box while also catching the Ghana international with his knee.
There was no punishment for Trafford with the referee seeing no offence take place on the field.
PGMOL felt there was no case for VAR to intervene as Trafford’s hands were down by his side.
