Cameron Norrie ‘feels goosebumps’ as he upsets 12th seed Frances Tiafoe to reach third round at Wimbledon – ‘It’s so special’

Cameron Norrie said beating Frances Tiafoe on Court One to reach the third round at Wimbledon was “so special”.

The Brit won 4-6 6-4 6-3 7-5 to get the better of the tournament’s 12th seed.

And he praised the support from the spectators, labelling Court One his favourite at the Grand Slam.

“I was really happy when I saw the schedule,” he said in his on-court interview. “I saw I was on Court One and that’s my favourite court. It’s an amazing atmosphere and we both played (at) a really high level.

“I just stayed calm and played point-by-point. It was so nice to play Frances at such a big match. I served really well in that last game and you guys (the fans) were amazing in that last game, so thank you.

“It’s so special. You forget so quickly. You just feel goosebumps. It’s such a special court and such a special tournament. I just walked out and smiled as much as I could. And then you have to go out to battle. I’m really happy with my level today.

“It’s so special. My parents are here, my sister is watching as well, and my girlfriend as well.”

It was a difficult start to the match for Norrie, who was broken by Tiafoe in the fifth game of the first set and found himself trailing.

But the 29-year-old responded superbly, saving three break points in the second set at 4-4 and going on to level the match.

Norrie broke Tiafoe’s serve in the third set but was quickly broken back, before a second break from Norrie allowed him to successfully serve for the set lead.

The American showed no signs of letting the match slip away in the fourth set, and both players had break opportunities throughout.

But Norrie was the man to get the decisive break, taking a close set 7-5 and securing a memorable victory on Court One.

The Brit will face either Jiri Lehecka or Mattia Bellucci in the third round at Wimbledon.
