World No. 11 Rune is set to make his Laver Cup debut this weekend in San Francisco as he competes for Team Europe against Team World.
Rune is relishing the experience and has revealed that he has heard plenty of positive feedback about the Laver Cup.
“For many of them, it’s their favourite event – even more than the Grand Slams. I have high expectations, but most of all I’m just going to really enjoy it.
“It’s not that often we get to play as a team, so I think that’s super cool. I think I will really thrive in this environment. I can’t wait to play. My plan is to bring a lot of energy and intensity.”
Rune will line up alongside Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud, Jakub Mensik and Flavio Cobolli on Team Europe.
Dane Rune says the team is “very strong” and it is “amazing” to have a fellow Scandinavian on board in Norway’s Ruud.
But asked to pick his dream doubles partner, Rune would go with world No. 1 Alcaraz, who he played alongside at the 2017 edition of Les Petit As, a prestigious junior tournament.
“That could be pretty iconic to relive that moment again,” he said.
“Those were good memories and obviously we played each other many times, where we’re on the opposite side of the net, so now we can finally try to be on the same side, which is going to be pretty cool.”
Rune is one of three debutants on Team Europe, along with Mensik and Cobolli. The trio are all 23 or under, helping set the average age of Team Europe at 23, compared to 25 for Team World.
“A lot of young, great energy, which is amazing,” said Rune. “It should be a lot of fun, and hopefully we can all play very well. We’re confident.”
How to watch the 2025 Laver Cup
The action kicks off at 9pm UK time on TNT Sports 4 on Friday, September 19.
The second match will follow immediately after, before the action resumes for the second set of matches at 5am on Saturday.
Coverage of the second day will also start at 9pm on TNT Sports 3, before coverage of Sunday’s final round of matches gets under way at 8pm on TNT Sports 4.
