Goodwin scored her first goal of the season after 13 minutes to put London City into the lead, powerfully hitting the top of the net after Everton failed to clear their lines from a corner.
London City invested heavily in the summer and they flexed their financial muscles at half-time, bringing on Grace Geyoro, a £1 million acquisition from Paris Saint-Germain.
Nikita Parris, another summer signing, then assisted Goodwin, with last season’s Championship top scorer adding her second 13 minutes into the second half.
It seemed to be heading towards a comfortable victory for the newly promoted side, but that all changed quickly when Nicole Momiki converted a penalty she won, after being fouled by Jana Fernandez with 20 minutes to go.
Everton pushed hard for a late equaliser but Elene Lete would not be beaten for a second time and the Toffees’ efforts were to no avail as Jocelyn Precheur’s side got their season up and running.
Kerolin inspires ‘unpredictable’ Man City in five-star win marred by Hemp injury
Manchester City rose to third place in the table with a comprehensive 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Brisbane Road.
City took the lead after 23 minutes with a well-taken strike from Aoba Fujino from just inside the box as Lize Kop’s net was breached for the first time this WSL season.
Khadija Shaw had an effort from close range saved brilliantly by Kop just a few minutes later, but the writing was on the wall for Spurs and it was not long before they conceded again.
Vivianne Miedema headed Alex Greenwood’s corner just over the line to score her 10th WSL goal against Tottenham and put her side two goals to the good.
Two quickly became three for the away side, as right-back Kerstin Casparij headed home from a deflected Kerolin shot to effectively put the game to bed before half-time.
It was not all positive for City though, who saw Lauren Hemp go off injured after just 22 minutes. She was later seen looking emotional with a boot on her left leg.
Hemp spent five months out injured with a meniscus injury to her right knee last year.
In the second half, things got worse for Tottenham, as Fujino was taken out by a sloppy challenge from Clare Hunt.
Shaw’s effort was saved comfortably by Kop, but that seemed to just delay the inevitable, and sure enough, City scored their fourth through debutant Grace Clinton who scored against her old side with a composed finish, with Hemp’s replacement Kerolin getting her second assist of the night.
There was something for Tottenham to cheer about though when Olivia Holdt scored a brilliant consolation goal but City were not done and Laura Coombs added a fifth in stoppage time from a Clinton pass.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Jeglertz said he wanted his side to become more unpredictable but confirmed he did not know how serious Hemp’s injury was.
He said: “The key thing for us is to be unpredictable, with these players we have. I have many and they are so different kind of players and I think that gives our team also this unpredictability.
“If you play with Grace Clinton or if you play with Aoba Fujino, totally different kind of players, they are playing in the same position but they give different things to the team, so I have a very good job in selecting what we need for this game.
“I just said we are sorry for her (Hemp) of course and let’s see how it turns out in the coming days.”
