Why Ousmane Dembele could miss Ballon d’Or ceremony as Paris Saint-Germain star vies with Lamine Yamal for award

Dembele’s 35 goals and 16 assists in 53 appearances across all competitions last season helped Paris Saint-Germain to their first-ever UEFA Champions League crown and fired the Frenchman into contention to win the most coveted individual honour in world football.

However, he could miss out on the awards ceremony on September 22 after PSG’s clash with Marseille was rescheduled for the same day.

Le Classique was due to take place on September 21 but was pushed back by 24 hours due to heavy rain and thunderstorms.

“Olympique de Marseille regrets that the conditions are not right to play the match this evening, both for its players, for its supporters already present, and for the full visibility of the event,” said Marseille in a statement.

Dembele was not included in Luis Enrique’s squad to face Marseille due to injury.

The forward may now face a decision over whether to attend the Ballon d’Or ceremony, but PSG head coach Luis Enrique will not be able to attend.

He was nominated for the Men’s Coach of the Year award alongside Antonio Conte, Hansi Flick, Enzo Maresca and Arne Slot.

PSG’s Achraf Hakimi, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Nuno Mendes, Vitinha and Fabian Ruiz have also been nominated for the Ballon d’Or but will not be able to attend as they are set to feature against Marseille.

Dembele’s closest rival to win the 2025 Ballon d’Or appears to be Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal.

The Spanish star enjoyed a phenomenal 2024/2025 campaign, helping his club win La Liga and reach the Champions League semi-finals.

PSG have enjoyed a strong start to the season in Ligue 1 and in Europe.

Dembele has been key to PSG’s success in the early stages of this season too, scoring two goals and providing two assists in four matches.
