Agassi was swift to jump into the celebrations with his team as the likes of Alex de Minaur, Reilly Opelka and Joao Fonseca engulfed the American on court following the victory, which ensured the Laver Cup returned to Team World following Team Europe’s victory last season.
Agassi is a legend of the sport, and someone who both sides look up to. The eight-time Grand Slam champion achieved the career Slam in 1999, and in his victory speech, Agassi was quick to turn his attention back to the majors.
Victory at the US Open took Alcaraz to six major titles, and if he wins in Australia next year he will join Agassi in achieving the career Grand Slam – like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic before him.
But Agassi is not too keen to see that happen just yet.

“Carlos, don’t be so greedy with all the Grands Slams, share some with your brothers, for God’s sake,” the American joked in his speech, before being swift to praise the rest of Team Europe.
“I want to say to Team Europe, it is such an honour to sit on the side of the court and watch you guys do what you do. It is remarkable and I love every second of it.
“And I wish you the brightest futures,” Agassi said to Casper Ruud, Holger Rune, Jakub Mensik, Flavio Cobolli and Zverev, before turning his attention back to his own side.
“Pat, it was an honour to be back with you,” Agassi said to his vice-captain Pat Rafter. “This is a guy that I loved competing against as even if I lost, the sport won. You are an amazing dude, amazing athlete and a better person.
“And to the rest of you, it has been one hell of a week. Thank you for the trust, thank you for allowing me in your lives for a brief period of time.
“I say you have ‘mother privileges’ in my life now and what mother privileges means is you call, you ask, and the answer is yes before you ask.”

Agassi later joked he had had too much champagne after announcing that his team had shocked “the world,” only to be swiftly corrected by a sharp De Minaur that they had in fact shocked Team Europe.
But aside from some banter with his players and one hilarious moment where the American legend struggled to get the champagne cork out, it proved a very smooth debut as Laver Cup captain for Agassi, who follows in the footsteps of John McEnroe.
And Fritz was quick to pay tribute to what Agassi brought to the table. “It’s awesome to see him fired up,” Fritz said.
“To be honest, I feel like it’s been the same – it’s impossible to see either Johnny Mac or Andre getting pumped up during the match and not also really have that fire you up as well.
“I mean, both of them have been very into it on the bench, which I mean, I love. It’s tennis legends that are there getting excited about me playing. It’s just fun to get pumped up with your team.”
