With the score still goalless, James Tavernier floated a deep free-kick into the box which Harry Souttar met from a very promising position.

The ball seemed destined for the net, but skipper Heynen had other ideas and made a stunning clearance to keep the scoreline on level terms.

Heynen somehow managed to claw the ball away with his right leg fully outstretched, and former Rangers striker McCoist could not help but marvel at the outstanding defending from the Genk star.

Speaking on commentary for TNT Sports, McCoist exclaimed: “That is one of the best I think I’ve ever seen! The ball in is great, the header is fantastic and the clearance is better.

“That is remarkable. I cannot tell you how difficult that is. I saw Tyrone Mings do one in Europe last year over in Belgium, funnily enough, and it was as good as I’ve seen – but that is even better.”

Sadly for Rangers fans, that frustration in front of goal proved to be a sign of things to come.

The Scottish Premiership side were beaten 1-0 on the night, as former Celtic frontman Oh Hyeon-gyu ensured the Belgians took all three points away from Glasgow.

That 55th-minute opener came after Mohamed Diomande was given his marching orders for a challenge on Zakaria El Ouahdi late on in the first half.

The result heaps even more pressure on manager Russell Martin, after what was the club’s fifth defeat of the season.

“Sadly, looking at it and listening to it, that looks absolutely miles off, miles off. Now you’ve got all the backing you like from owners and directors and the board, but if the people who pay their money coming into the stadium all of a sudden don’t continue, something has to give.

“I’m desperate for Russell Martin to turn things around and start getting a few results, but it looks miles off to me, looks miles off.”

Rangers will now turn their attention back to domestic matters when they travel to Livingston on Sunday, before their next Europa League clash away at Sturm Graz next Thursday.
