Sergio Busquets: Barcelona and Spain legend to retire from football at end of Major League Soccer season – ‘Incredible story’

Legendary former Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets reflected on a brilliant career with pride after announcing his retirement.
The 38-year-old will officially call it a day after the current Major League Soccer season with Inter Miami, and will go down as Spain’s greatest-ever midfielders.

Busquets enjoyed an incredible 18-year spell with Barca, where he won nine La Liga titles and the UEFA Champions League three times.

He will be remembered as one of Spain’s greatest-ever midfielders, alongside the likes of Xabi Alonso, Xavi and Andres Iniesta, as the side won three major tournaments in a row between 2008 and 2012.

Busquets said in a video on social media: “I feel like the time has come to say goodbye to my career as a professional footballer. It’s been almost 20 years of enjoying this incredible story I always dreamed of.

“I’m retiring very happy, proud, fulfilled, and above all, grateful. Thank you all very much, see you soon.”

Busquets progressed through Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy before making his first-team debut against Racing Santander in 2008.

He won a staggering total of 32 major honours at Barcelona, and was also part of the Spain squad which won both the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championship.

Busquets made 143 caps for the national team to become his country’s third-highest appearance holder, ranking behind only Iker Casillas (167) and Sergio Ramos (180).

With 722 appearances for Barcelona, Busquets also sits third on the club’s all-time appearance list, behind Xavi (767) and Inter Miami team-mate Lionel Messi (778).

Alongside Messi, Busquets also plays with former Barca team-mates Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez in Florida after joining the MLS club in July 2023.

He would go onto to add to his already bulging trophy cabinet, winning the Leagues Cup and Supporters’ Shield.

Busquets’ attention will be on the remainder of the MLS season for now, after Miami booked their play-off place following a 4-0 win over New York City FC on Wednesday.

The play-offs commence on October 22 ahead of the MLS Cup on December 6.
