Former Arsenal academy player Billy Vigar has sadly died at the age of 21 after suffering a severe brain injury during a match.
The striker sustained the injury while playing for Chichester City in their non-league game against Wingate & Finchley on Saturday. The fixture was quickly suspended after the incident.
Chichester confirms tragic news
In a statement released by Chichester, the club confirmed the devastating news of Vigar’s passing. They also shared words from his family.
The message read: “It is with great sadness that Chichester City Football Club has to confirm the passing of Billy Vigar. Below is a statement from his family. We request that his family’s privacy is respected at this most difficult time.”
Supporters, friends, and fellow clubs have since paid their respects, with many expressing shock at the loss of such a young player.
Career through the ranks
Vigar’s football journey began at Hove Rivervale FC, his local side, before Arsenal scouts noticed his talent. He joined Hale End at 14 and immediately impressed with 17 goals in his first season.
In 2020, his strong form earned him a scholarship with Arsenal, joining the club full-time for the 2020/21 season.
That year’s intake featured Charles Sagoe Jr, Remy Mitchell, Omari Hutchinson, Charlie Patino, and Brook Norton-Cuffy.
Vigar played for Arsenal in both the Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy. Coaches often praised his work rate, as he was comfortable across attacking roles and even filled in at the back when required. His versatility made him a reliable option in different situations.
Loan spells followed at Derby County and Eastbourne Borough, giving him valuable experience across different levels.
After leaving Arsenal, he returned to the south coast in 2024 and signed for Hastings United. Last month, he joined Chichester to continue his career.
Vigar’s passing leaves a deep void for his family, friends, and former teammates. The football community has united in grief, remembering a player who gave his all to the game.
