And Chelsea were once again outnumbered deep in their own penalty area from a cross when three Brighton players queued up to turn home the winning goal, Maxim de Cuyper got the crucial touch from point-blank range and Welbeck scored his second in the 10th minute of injury time.

Pressure will be building on Enzo Maresca and his world champion side as following yet another summer of heavy investment, Chelsea are eighth and level on points with Brighton.

Leeds United continued their impressive start to the season at home to Bournemouth but a 93rd-minute goal from Eli Junior Kroupi rescued a point for The Cherries.

Bournemouth took the lead through a laser-guided Antoine Semenyo free-kick but Leeds hit back before half-time with Joe Rodon’s deflected header, and then took the lead when Sean Longstaff beat Dorde Petrovic off the post with a half-volley, before Kroupi’s acrobatic, athletic finish at the back post ensured the spoils were shared at Elland Road.

Leeds join Chelsea and Brighton on eight points after six games while Bournemouth remain in the top four.
