Iga Swiatek bagelled in shock loss to Emma Navarro, Great Britain’s Sonay Kartal stuns Mirra Andreeva in biggest career win

That marks her best performance in a Masters 1000 tournament this calendar year.

Few predicted the 24-year-old, who had lost the two previous meetings between the pair, would sweep to victory in such impressive fashion, especially after dropping the second set.

But she raised her game, and gave world No. 2 Swiatek – no stranger to dishing out a 6-0 thrashing – a taste of her own medicine to clinch victory.

“I definitely had some adjusting to do after our last couple times playing,” said Navarro on court.

“I wanted to come out and play calm and steady and focused tennis. I did that, so I’m happy with the way the match went tonight.”

There were three breaks of serve in a topsy-turvy first set, with Swiatek striking first to take a 2-0 lead.

Navarro hit back, though, winning four games in a row, with that advantage proving enough to take the lead.

The second set followed a similar pattern, with the Pole dropping serve first, only to immediately respond by breaking to 30.

A further break for 6-4, with Navarro dropping serve at just the wrong time, meant the match headed to a decider.

And from there, the American flicked a switch, winning 15 of 19 points behind her own serve and breaking three times, with each of those games going to deuce.

Swiatek, the top seed after Aryna Sabalenka’s withdrawal, was not helped by making a whopping 70 unforced errors.

Despite the win, Navarro saw plenty in her own game to improve, adding: “I’m feeling good but there’s always stuff to get better at.

“(There is) lots to work on, but I’ll try to enjoy this one and then it’s back to work tomorrow.”

Sonay Kartal scored the biggest win of her career in beating world No. 5 Mirra Andreeva 7-5 2-6 7-5.

It is the first time the 23-year-old has won against a top-10-ranked player, and she will now jump above Katie Boulter to become the British No. 2 behind Emma Raducanu.

“She’s a top-10 player for a very good reason, she made me play my best tennis today. I’m super happy with the level I managed to dig it out in the end,” said Kartal.

“I think the way I carry myself on the court is one of my biggest assets. You could look down the other end at me and you wouldn’t really know if I’m winning or losing.

“I just tried to put that second set behind me. She played some great tennis so I just tried to level it out in the third set and keep the scoreboard pressure as high as I could.”

Kartal, who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon this year, had already defeated 14th seed Daria Kasatkina to get this far.

She converted two of her five break point opportunities over the course of the match, which lasted two hours and 27 minutes.

Having lost the second set 6-2, Kartal could quite easily have faded away, but she rallied to break Andreeva in the final game.

“She made me play my best tennis today so credit to her for making me bring that level,” added Kartal.

“I’m super happy with the level I managed to stick out at the end.”

Kartal will now make her debut in the quarter-finals of a Masters 1000 event.

Standing between her and a place in the last four is 26th seed Linda Noskova, who needed just two sets to beat Anastasia Potapova.
