NEWCASTLE TOO STRONG FOR FOREST
Ange Postecoglou remains winless as Nottingham Forest manager after a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United courtesy of goals from Bruno Guimaraes and Nick Woltemade.
In a drab first half, Newcastle carved out the better chances with Joelinton’s header kept out by Matz Sels with the Brazilian also having a shot saved.
The visitors, who handed Premier League debuts to Jair Cunha and Nicolo Savona, were compact and organised at the back but did not create a lot in the first period.
The returning Morgan Gibbs-White had a free-kick saved, while Chris Wood failed to control the ball with the goal at his mercy against his former club.
Eddie Howe’s side stepped it up in the second half and got their reward when Guimaraes curled a shot into the corner from long range after winning the ball from Gibbs-White.
Wood continued to misfire for Forest compared to his form last season, wasting another chance soon after from close range.
Postecoglou brought on Igor Jesus, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Omari Hutchinson but it failed to yield a goal, with Newcastle going close with Sandro Tonali’s volley tipped over and Woltemade hitting the bar following a corner.
And the home side wrapped up victory from the penalty spot when Elliot Anderson fouled Guimaraes and Woltemade stepped up to hammer his penalty into the top corner.
The result makes it seven games without a victory for Postecoglou since taking over from Nuno Espirito Santo and Forest remain in 17th spot while The Magpies climb to 11th place.
