Ederson hits out at ‘fake news’ as he clarifies Manchester City future – ‘I understand you guys’

Goalkeeper Ederson has said his future is with Manchester City, claiming reports linking him with a move away from the Etihad are 99% “fake news”.
The 31-year-old is entering the final year of his current contract with City, and had been heavily linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League last summer, revealing in October there was an “offer on the table” which was “way above the average”.

But the Brazilian has confirmed his intention to stay with Pep Guardiola’s side for a ninth season, having arrived in 2017 from Benfica.

Speaking to reporters at the FIFA Club World Cup ahead of City’s final group game against Juventus, Ederson told reporters: “My future is here.

“Some friends send me a lot of news, but 99% is fake news. I understand you guys.

“You need the news to put a like on social media, or rant for the news. I understand, but there’s a lot of fake news around my name.”

City endured a difficult campaign last season, finishing 13 points behind Premier League winners Liverpool, losing the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace and suffering early exits in the UEFA Champions League and Carabao Cup.

However, they had won the Premier League on the previous four occasions, while claiming a historic treble in the 2022/23 campaign, and Ederson is hungry to help the team return to winning ways.

“My head is here,” said Ederson. “It stays with the city. It gives me everything to go back to the Premier League again and try to win the Champions League as well.

“My mind is staying in the club.”

Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa has been linked with a move to the Etihad, with reports saying the 25-year-old has a £64m release clause.

Asked about Ederson’s future, manager Guardiola said: “I don’t know.

“I am so pleased what I am seeing in the training sessions and he is with us. He has had a spectacular decade with us and his contribution has been massive in many aspects.”

During his time at City, Ederson has won six Premier League titles, the Champions League and two FA Cups.
