Arsenal are interested in signing Levante striker Etta Eyong, according to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo (page 2).
The Gunners bolstered their attack last summer with the acquisitions of Viktor Gyokeres, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke.
Gyokeres and Eze have already made plenty of goal contributions, while Madueke was hugely impressive before his untimely knee injury last month.
Arsenal are likely to add more quality to their frontline next year, and Mundo Deportivo claim that they are keen on landing Eyong’s services.
Eyong has been a revelation for Levante after his summer transfer from Villarreal, and he is keen on pursuing a new club in the New Year.
The Cameroonian has already played for two teams in Villarreal and Levante. He cannot play for a third club this season due to FIFA regulations.
Still, the 22-year-old is prepared to join a new outfit during the January transfer window. He plans to return to Levante on loan for the rest of the season.
Eyong has a La Liga release clause worth £26 million, while the same clause stands at £35 million for Premier League clubs, as per Mundo Deportivo.
Barcelona are also strongly interested, but they may struggle to sign the striker in January unless they return to the 1:1 spending rule set by La Liga.
The Spanish champions consider him as a replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
Eyong story could be agent-driven
Eyong has had a fabulous start to the campaign with Villarreal and Levante. He has accumulated six goals and three assists from 10 La Liga appearances.
Aside from his goal involvements, the Cameroonian has impressed with his physical presence and pace upfront. He can also operate in a wider role if required.
He has likewise impressed with his defensive work rate. Eyong has won an average of five duels and two tackles per game with almost three recoveries.
Eyong has barely put a foot wrong in the early part of the season, and we believe his representatives could be driving the speculation about his future.
The striker obviously wants a bigger challenge away from Levante next year. There are no surprises that Arsenal are being linked amid their stellar start to the season.
In our view, a new striker may not be prioritised by Arsenal. They have just signed Viktor Gyokeres to compete with Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus (both injured) upfront.
Havertz and Jesus are primed to return before the turn of the year, and could have big roles to play in the club’s league title pursuit during the back end of the campaign.
Jesus could potentially head for the exit door next summer. Still, we are not convinced that Eyong would accept the role of being the third-choice marksman in the squad.
There is a higher possibility of him joining Barcelona than Arsenal at the moment.
