Wales history-maker Jess Fishlock said the tournament newcomers were “so close” to competing at Euro 2025 after a 4-1 defeat to France left them on the cusp of elimination.
After losing 3-0 to the Netherlands in their opener, Wales needed a result to keep their hopes alive ahead of their final group game against England.
But they were beaten by a clinical France side, despite impressing for long periods.
“I am extremely proud of these girls tonight,” said Fishlock, 38, who scored Wales’ first ever goal at a major tournament.
“There were moments for most of the game where we were in it, we were doing what we expected to do. The biggest learning point is that in the little moments we need to be better. We were so close, I am so proud.
“We have the best fans in the world, they come out here, they are loud and proud. They know this is hard and we are giving everything we can. Thank you to the Red Wall and everyone out here supporting us.”
It took less than eight minutes for France to strike, when Clara Mateo volleyed home after a corner was only half cleared.
But Wales hit back almost insantly. Ceri Holland picked out record scorer Fishlock, making her 162nd appearance for her country, and she slotted home. The offside flag was initially raised, but a VAR check meant the goal was given.
Wales celebrated a goal of some significance, and they performed well for the remainder of the first half. But they were dealt a blow just before half-time when Holland fouled Mateo in the box and a penalty was given. Kadidiatou Diani scored from the spot to restore France’s lead.
A mistake from goalkeeper Safia Middleton-Patel proved costly just after the break; she took too long on the ball and was dispossessed by the lively Mateo, who picked out Amel Majri to score.
France were stronger as the game progressed and Grace Geyero put them out of sight just beyond the hour mark.
Having already beaten England, France now need just a point in their final match against the Netherlands to secure their progression as group winners.
Wales, meanwhile, need to beat England by four goals and hope France beat the Netherlands.
