While all the limelight has been on Marc-Andre ter Stegen this summer, he isn’t the only goalkeeper expected to leave Barcelona this summer.
The club are also looking to offload Inaki Pena, who was serving as Ter Stegen’s understudy for the longest time until midway through last season.
Now, with Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny emerging as the two main goalkeepers, Pena is no longer a part of Barcelona’s first-team plans.
Pena’s exit process has stalled
However, a recent report from MARK has highlighted that Inaki Pena’s bid to exit Barcelona has stalled.
The goalkeeper had hoped to finalise his departure before the team resumed pre-season training, but that has not materialised.
The players have already been in training for almost a week, and there has been no major breakthrough regarding a potential transfer.
The report adds that Pena has received multiple offers, mostly from clubs outside Spain, but he has not been convinced by any of them so far.
He is taking his time, which has created a problem for Barcelona as the club desperately need to offload unwanted stars in order to reduce the stress on the balance sheet.
Barcelona are set to leave for their tour of Japan on Thursday, taking 26 players. Flick is currently working with a 36-man squad, including Ter Stegen, meaning ten players will be excluded.
If no deal is reached in time, Pena may travel with the squad, but there’s also a chance he could be left out altogether.
Therefore, it becomes imperative for Barcelona to try and convince Pena to take up an offer and leave the club as soon as possible, so that the player, too, can get some time to train with his new team.
