The champions of each continent
are set to compete for a global basketball title when the annual
FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2024 commences in Singapore on September
12-15.
A historic FIBA Hall of Fame
Class of 2024 enshrinement ceremony will also take place in the
same island country with several basketball legends from different
countries honored for their national team contributions and
basketball performances.
Representing the USA is NBA
G-League United, a team comprised of select G-League prospects &
stars who will represent the G in domestic and international
competitions. The roster is yet to be revealed in the coming days
as the competition draws near.
The FIBA Intercontinental Cup
will be played at the Singapore Sports Hub in Singapore and will
feature clubs from all five FIBA regions for the first ever
time.
This would be the tournament’s
34th edition and will comprise 6 teams including Unicaja (Spain,
Europe); Petro de Luanda (Angola, Africa); and Al Riyadi (Lebanon,
Asia) in Group A while United (USA, North America); Quimsa
(Argentina, South America); and Tasmania Jackjumpers (Australia,
Oceania) make up Group B.
The three teams in each group
will play in a round-robin format with the champions facing off in
the Final on September 15, while the runners-up for each group
battle for third place.
The FIBA Hall of Fame Class of
2024 enshrinement ceremony will take place on the eve of the Final,
on September 14 with USA’s Reggie Miller and Serbia’s Predrag
Stojakovic headlining the 2024 inductees. The list also includes
fellow former players Miao Lijie of China, Danira Nakic-Bilic of
Croatia, Kirk Samuel Penney of New Zealand, Romain Sato of Central
African Republic, Skaidrite Smildzina-Budovska of Latvia, and
Italian-American coach Dan Peterson.
In a press release by FIBA, FIBA
Secretary General Andreas Zagklis expressed his delight in the
historic event. “The FIBA Intercontinental Cup is a unique global
experience in club basketball, but the 34th edition will set a
remarkable milestone in basketball history,” Zagklis
said.
“It’s only fitting that
Singapore, which ushered in the new era of the competition last
year, will also provide the stage for its expansion to Oceania and
for the FIBA Hall of Fame induction ceremony,” Mr. Zagklis
added.
