Arsenal are on the verge of signing Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP after making a decisive breakthrough in negotiations over the weekend.
Talks had previously stalled over the structure of those add-ons, but sources indicate the remaining details are now being finalised.
Gyokeres has long made it clear that he wants to join Arsenal, and the 27-year-old is expected to sign a five-year contract running until 2030.
Despite enquiries from Manchester United and other European clubs, the Sweden international showed no interest in alternative destinations. His representatives have also waived commission fees to ensure the move goes through.
The striker is currently training individually after being excluded from Sporting’s pre-season preparations.
Club president Frederico Varandas had accused Gyokeres of failing to report back on time and threatened disciplinary action, but the player has remained focused on sealing his move to north London.
Arsenal view the deal as a crucial step towards strengthening their attack after falling short in the title race last season. They finished second behind Liverpool and struggled for consistency in the centre-forward position, with both Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus facing fitness issues during the campaign.
Gyokeres, who scored 54 goals and provided 13 assists in all competitions last season and helped Sporting win the league and cup double, will bring a more physical and direct option up front. His profile fits Mikel Arteta’s desire for a striker who can both lead the line and link play in the final third.
The 15-cap Sweden international is expected to link up with the Arsenal squad during their pre-season tour of Asia, with the club hopeful of announcing the transfer before their next fixture.
Sporting director Andrea Berta has moved swiftly this summer, already bringing in Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Noni Madueke. A deal for Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera is in advanced negotiations.
When asked about the summer’s business, Arteta hinted there could still be more arrivals, saying earlier in the week: “We are working on different fronts. The window is long, and we are not finished.”
Gyokeres now looks set to be the next name through the door, but the Gunners are not done yet.
