Golden State Warriors head coach
Steve Kerr has agreed to a two-year, $35 million contract extension
with the team,
according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
A four-time champion coach with
the Warriors, Kerr’s extension will make him the highest-paid coach
in the history of the NBA. He will surpass the likes of the San
Antonio Spurs Gregg Popovich and recently-extended Erik Spoelstra of the Miami
Heat by making $17.5
million a year.
Kerr’s current contract was set
to expire by the end of this season and this extension allows him
to align with Warriors superstar Stephen Curry, who has two years
left on his contract.
ANALYSIS: This
new deal more or less guarantees Kerr will ride off into the sunset
with Curry alongside Draymond Green and possibly Klay Thompson (if
he signs a new deal in the offseason). The quartet has been one of
the winningest groups of all-time, winning four championships in
six trips to the Finals.
The Warriors have been
rejuvenated since the NBA trade deadline by sticking to what they
have. Kerr, Curry, Green and Thompson have
been at the forefront of it all.
