Arsenal have completed the signing of highly-rated Spanish defender Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia in a deal worth an initial €15 million (£13m).
Mosquera arrives following the departure of Takehiro Tomiyasu, who left the club earlier this month after terminating his contract by mutual agreement.
The Gunners see Mosquera as one of Europe’s most promising young centre-backs and a key long-term addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad.
He becomes the fifth summer signing following deals for Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard and Noni Madueke, with Viktor Gyokeres expected to join shortly.
Sporting Director Andrea Berta described Mosquera as “one of the strongest young defenders in European football” and emphasised the club’s long-term investment in his development.
Mikel Arteta praised his pace, intelligence and positional versatility, noting that he can operate on either side of central defence and cover at right-back.
Mosquera joins from Valencia, where he made 90 senior appearances after rising through the academy ranks.
He played every minute in 37 of Valencia’s 38 La Liga matches last season, highlighting both his fitness and reliability.
The deal comes after Arsenal explored costlier moves for Dean Huijsen and Marc Guehi earlier in the summer, but neither was convinced by the prospect of playing behind William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães.
Mosquera, while a less expensive option, is seen as a player with high upside and tactical fit for Arsenal’s defensive system.
He is quick, comfortable defending in space, and strong in one-on-one duels — traits that align well with the club’s high line and aggressive pressing.
Although not yet dominant in the air, Arsenal believe his ceiling is high and are confident he can develop under Arteta’s guidance.
The Spanish youth international has also featured at every level for Spain from U15 to U21 and was part of the squad that won Olympic gold in Paris this summer.
He is expected to link up with the Arsenal squad during the ongoing pre-season tour in Asia, having already received clearance to travel from Valencia.
Arsenal return to action on Sunday against Newcastle in Singapore, before travelling to Hong Kong to face Tottenham.
Mosquera becomes the latest piece in a defensive unit designed for both present depth and future succession.
