Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has spoken about Cristhian Mosquera’s arrival, the club’s injury situation and the possibility of further additions to the squad, as the Gunners continue their pre-season tour of Singapore ahead of Sunday’s match against Newcastle United.
Mosquera joined from Valencia earlier this month and is now with the team for the first time after completing the formalities of his move.
“He has just joined us and this is a great opportunity for him to start feeling part of the group,” Arteta said. “He brings qualities that are different to what we already have in that position. We’ll see how he adapts but we are happy to have him here.”
Mosquera is Arsenal’s fifth summer signing following deals for Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Noni Madueke and Christian Norgaard, who also spoke publicly for the first time since making the switch from Brentford.
“It’s been fantastic so far,” Norgaard said. “Everyone has been very welcoming. I’m learning more about how we want to play and I’m just focused on helping the team.”
Arteta also hinted that more additions could be on the way as Arsenal look to complete their business early enough to integrate new faces during pre-season. While he refused to be drawn on specific names, including reported target Viktor Gyokeres, he admitted the club is still active in the market.
“You know I cannot talk about any player who is not ours,” he said with a smile. “But we are always trying to improve. The idea is always to be proactive, and if the opportunity is there, we’ll be ready.”
On the injury front, there were updates on Gabriel Magalhaes and Jurrien Timber. Gabriel missed training with what was described as a minor issue, and while Arteta said the club would not take any risks, the expectation is that the Brazilian defender will return shortly.
Timber, meanwhile, is edging closer to full team training after missing most of last season with a knee injury.
“Jurrien is very close,” Arteta said. “He’s been working really hard and we’re pleased with his progress.”
Arsenal face Newcastle United at the Singapore National Stadium on Sunday in their second pre-season fixture of the tour.
