The match in Athens was watched by 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, who was in attendance with son Stefan.
“It was an honour to play in front of him,” said Fonseca about Djokovic.
From Athens, Fonseca travelled to play in front of another tennis legend in San Francisco.
Fonseca is competing at the Laver Cup for the first time this weekend and will become the youngest player in the competition’s history when he turns out for Team World.
“My hands are sweating because I’m going to meet Roger,” said Fonseca as he waited courtside for the Swiss great.
When Federer walked out, he greeted Fonseca with a warm smile and embrace before the pair shared a few words.
“Finally! Nice to meet you, it’s a pleasure,” said Federer, who is one of the founders of the Laver Cup. “Congratulations on everything so far. Well done on a great career so far.”
Fonseca is one of the brightest young players on the ATP Tour and has enjoyed a rapid rise since winning the Next Gen Finals last year.
He started the season by stunning Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open, then won his first ATP Tour title, before making the third rounds at the French Open and Wimbledon.
The Brazilian is one of three non-American players on Team World, alongside Australian Alex de Minaur and Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo.
Federer is expected to attend the Laver Cup, which starts on Friday, September 19 and runs for three days.
Alcaraz is sporting a new haircut, having gone platinum blonde, and is set to lead Team Europe.
Alcaraz was Team Europe’s star player a year ago, winning eight points, the most a player has earned in a single edition, and beating Taylor Fritz in a winner-takes-all rubber at the end.

The action kicks off at 21:00 UK time on TNT Sports 4 on Friday, September 19.
The second match will follow immediately after, before the action resumes for the second set of matches at 5:00 on Saturday morning.
Coverage of the second day will also start at 21:00 on TNT Sports 3, before coverage of Sunday’s final round of matches gets under way at 20:00 on TNT Sports 4.
