GERMANY ON BRINK OF QUARTER-FINALS AFTER COMEBACK VICTORY

Goals from Sjoeke Nusken and Lea Schuller helped Germany come from behind to beat Denmark 2-1 and leave themselves on the cusp of a UEFA Women’s Euro quarter-final berth, and Denmark close to an exit.

Amalie Vangsgaard’s well-hit strike meant the Danes led at the break, but a Klara Buhl goal disallowed for an offside player in the goalkeeper’s eyesight minutes earlier was evidence of the threat Germany posed.

That threat came to fruition within 10 minutes of the restart, as a VAR review resulted in a German penalty – having taken one away in the first half – and Chelsea’s Nusken made no mistake.

In the 66th minute, the comeback was complete after Denmark’s Emma Snerle was struck in the face by a team-mate’s clearance and the ball ricocheted kindly for Germany. Play carried on, despite Snerle’s apparent head injury, and Jule Brand slipped in Schuller who put Germany ahead with a clinical, first-time finish.

An injury to the referee was among the reasons for nine minutes of added time, and 11 were played, but a Danish equaliser never felt likely as Germany showed their class in seeing the game out.

With two wins from two, Germany top Group C will be assured of a quarter-final spot if Poland fail to beat Sweden. Anything but a Polish victory will eliminate Denmark.
