Jannik Sinner cancels practice session after MRI scan to raise fears of injury ahead of Wimbledon quarter-final against Ben Shelton

Although he won the contest, it was only because Dimitrov himself had to retire with injury when leading by two sets to love.

Sinner had treatment on his elbow during a medical timeout in the second set of the match and then had an MRI on the injury on Tuesday.

The Italian top seed was due to practice at 4pm at Wimbledon’s Aorangi Park but, per PA, the session was cancelled.

Sinner plays 10th seed Ben Shelton in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Discussing his injury after the win over Dimitrov, Sinner said: “It was quite an unfortunate fall.

“I checked the videos a little bit, and it didn’t seem a tough one, but I still felt it quite a lot, especially on serve and forehand.

“I could feel it. So let’s see. Tomorrow we are going to check to see how it is, and then we see.

“Tomorrow we are going to check with MRI to see if there’s something serious, and then we’ll try to adjust it.”

The winner of the quarter-final between Sinner and Shelton plays either Novak Djokovic or Flavio Cobolli in the semi-finals. Sinner is bidding to win Wimbledon for the first time.

“I don’t think I’m a favourite against these guys at the moment,” said Djokovic.

“I think they are (the favourites). Both of them. But I probably have my best chance against them here.

“If it comes down to me facing one or both of them, which I hope it does, as it would mean I have proceeded all the way to the final, then I’ll obviously look for my best game to win.

“I think I do have a chance. There’s no doubt about it. I think my results on grass, even in the previous years, are a testament to my confidence on this surface.

“I’ve been playing some really good tennis this year. So I feel good about myself. I feel confident. I feel motivated to go all the way. Let’s see what happens.”

The world No. 1’s coach, Darren Cahill, gave fans an update on Sinner’s MRI on Tuesday evening.

He revealed the Italian is still waiting for the results of the scan ahead of his quarter-final clash with Shelton.

However, he added that the three-time Grand Slam winner was able to hit a few balls ahead of Wednesday’s match.

Cahill believes it is important that Sinner stays sharp at this stage of the tournament.

“No news on the MRI just yet,” Cahill said during an interview with ESPN. “He had it earlier today and he can’t take a day off, so he wanted to touch the ball.

“So Simone and myself just fed him a few balls out of the basket. It’s not a bad thing sometimes (to practise on hard court).

“The more you play on grass with the uneven bounces, the more your timing goes off.

“(Andre) Agassi used to do it all the time… We’ve done that for a couple of years, so it wasn’t out of the ordinary.”
