According to Sports WorldBarcelona are completely calm and confident about renewing Frenkie de Jong’s contracteven though the process is currently delayed.
The reason for the holdup is not due to any disagreement between the player and the club, but rather a legal technicality involving De Jong’s former agent, Ali Dursun.
De Jong has not yet formally ended his contract with Dursun, who has been with him since his Ajax days.
Until this legal matter is fully resolved, Barcelona cannot officially begin negotiations with De Jong’s new agent to finalise the renewal. However, this is seen as a temporary issue, and both sides remain optimistic about reaching an agreement.
Mutual agreement in place
Both De Jong and Barcelona share the same objective, which is to extend his contract, which currently runs until 2026.
The midfielder’s existing deal was signed back in October 2020, during Josep Maria Bartomeu’s presidency, when he agreed to defer a portion of his salary to help the club during the financial crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
That agreement extended his stay from 2024 to 2026.
Furthermore, ever since recovering from an ankle injury, De Jong has become a key figure in Hansi Flick’s system.
He now forms a strong midfield partnership with Pedri, and the manager fully trusts him to lead the team in the middle of the park.
Improvement in the relationship
The relationship between De Jong and the Barcelona fans has also improved dramatically. Last August, during the presentation of the Gamper Trophy, some supporters demanded his departure and even booed him.
Today, things are different. His consistent performances and leadership on the pitch have earned him the respect of both the dressing room and the stands.
For Barcelona, the focus is to resolve the agent issue and finalise De Jong’s renewal as soon as possible.
Both the club and the player are on the same page, and there is no sense of panic about the current delay.
